  • Measuring performance in clinical outcomes: anaesthetics

The Anaesthetics clinical team at Cardiff and Value University Health Board was one of many pathways to collaborate with MCO. By digitising patient reported-outcome measures (PROMs), with specific platform features designed for the peri-operative settings, patients undergoing colorectal surgery were invited to complete the Bauer, EQ-5D-5L, and VAS questionnaires five days after surgery. This study provided valuable insights into the average EQ-5D-VAS scores before and after surgery, identified the poorest scoring patient domains, as well as the feasibility and potential success of using digital software for collecting PROMs data. Building on this success, the clinical team plans to expand their work with additional questions at various time-points post-surgery to assess long-term patient outcomes.

  • BMJ for the first time has reported that the combination of PROMs with supportive oncology services, could save the NHS substantial amounts of money.

One year after the introduction of collection and analysis of PROMs from patients with treatable but not curable cancers University Hospitals Sussex using MCO, the published results demonstrate the positive impacts for patients and hospitals and clinics. In addition to the key findings, results show a return on investment with a benefit cost ratio of 1.4 – that is, for every £1 invested in the service, £1.40 was saved per patient.

  • The introduction of routine use of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measures in a mixed oncology population

University Hospitals Sussex implemented the routine use of electronic remote patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in a mixed oncology population, focusing on those with treatable but not curable cancers. This report reviews the use of MCO by 324 patients over a 9 month period, concluding on the value and effectiveness of remote PROMs collection.

  • Assessing the feasibility of ePRO completion in older men receiving treatment for advanced prostate cancer both within the clinic and from home.

There are multiple examples of successful ePRO programmes but no specific feasibility studies in those who are less digitally engaged. Prostate cancer is predominantly a disease of older men and digital exclusion is associated with increased age. This article highlights how ePRO measures can improve patient care and streamline services, the measures are feasible in clinic but more challenging from home, and the strategies to support remote completion.

  • The challenge of introducing electronic Patient-Reported Outcome Measures into a radiotherapy service

Our partners at The Royal College of Radiologists discuss how they have been using the platform to collect and analyse PROMs data from patients undergoing radical pelvic radiotherapy, without physician bias. This article follows the experience of Project Trigger to-date, and outlines the potential for the national roll-out of a similar project using the same low-resource model.
